Vintage Rex Bassking Head & Cabinet Model BA600 - Aus 1970

Here is a 1970 Rex Bassking BA600 head and cabinet, a significant example of Australian amplifier manufacturing from the peak era of Rex production in Melbourne. Rex Amplifiers, founded by Frank Lambretti and his brother in the 1950s, became known for their robust construction and high-quality designs, and this model reflects the craftsmanship and attention to detail that defined the brand during its most respected years.

The Bassking head is powered by a pair of EL34 tubes, delivering strong, full-bodied output with a rich harmonic profile and excellent dynamic response. Both channels are voiced identically, providing consistent tone and straightforward usability across different inputs. Around 18 months ago, the amplifier was professionally serviced by respected technician Warren Brown of Brownout (Port Macquarie), who replaced capacitors, resistors, and other ageing components as required. This restoration ensures reliable modern operation while maintaining the amp’s original character.

A key feature of this setup is the original pair of 12” Pioneer alnico speakers housed in the cabinet. These rare speakers are highly regarded for their smooth top end, warm midrange, and musical compression, and they pair exceptionally well with the EL34 power section to deliver a balanced and expressive vintage tone.

Overall, the BA600 produces a powerful yet articulate sound, with depth, warmth, and clarity that suits both bass and guitar applications depending on the setup. It carries a distinct vintage Australian voice, combining authority in the low end with natural musical detail.
