Vintage Rex AG-6 Combo - Aus 1968

Here is a 1968 Rex AG-6, a compact Australian-made amplifier produced in Melbourne during a period when local manufacturers were establishing a strong reputation for innovative, high-quality boutique-style amps. This particular example carries a notable provenance, having been acquired by the current owner directly from the son of the original owner, maintaining a clear and authentic historical connection.

The amplifier has undergone a comprehensive professional restoration by respected technician Warren Brown, who carefully replaced necessary components to return the amp to full operational condition while preserving its original vintage character and tonal identity. The result is a well-balanced restoration that maintains authenticity while ensuring modern reliability.

A key tonal improvement includes the replacement of the original 8-inch Realistic speaker with a Jensen unit, significantly enhancing clarity, response, and overall tonal depth. This upgrade broadens the amp’s versatility, making it more suitable for a range of playing styles while retaining its vintage voice. In addition, a speaker extension lead has been installed, allowing the amp to be paired with an external cabinet for increased projection and flexibility in performance or recording environments.

Tonally, the Rex AG-6 delivers warm, expressive vintage character with a responsive midrange and smooth top end, benefiting from both its original circuit design and thoughtful modern enhancements.
