Vintage Fender Stratocaster - USA 1973
Pickup currently unavailable
This very early 1973 Fender Stratocaster is an exceptional example from the transitional early 70s CBS era, presented in the rare factory Walnut custom colour finish with visible grain beneath the lacquer. Even more remarkable, it retains its set of 1973 black bobbin pickups, a seldom seen feature that makes this a standout among its contemporaries.
The body shows authentic, even playwear and light lacquer checking consistent with a thin original finish. It has the look and feel of a well loved vintage Strat that’s been played regularly but never abused. The natural patina on the hardware and slight fading of the Walnut hue give it genuine vintage appeal.
The maple neck features dot inlays, a clear and intact Fender waterslide logo, and the correct factory stamp. The truss rod turns freely and the profile feels comfortable in hand, providing that classic early 70s Fender feel.
Electronics are all original, including the staggered pole black bobbin pickups stamped 144073, with the middle pickup rewound in the US by Lindy Fralin. The original 3 way selector remains in place along with the factory pots dating to the 49th week of 1972. Bridge saddles are clean and fully functional, with smooth travel for accurate intonation. The neck plate bears serial number 514644 and a faintly etched previous owner’s name and ID number, a typical period detail.
The current white pickguard is a later replacement, however the original black pickguard is included with the guitar. The original tremolo cavity cover is no longer present, though a black reproduction is provided.
Playability is excellent thanks to a professional stainless steel refret that feels silky smooth and will last indefinitely. Action is comfortable, intonation spot on, and tone is everything you want from a seasoned early 70s Strat - clear, articulate and full of shimmer with plenty of warmth from the Walnut body.
At just 3.5 kilos, it’s a lightweight and resonant example of a hard to find colour and pickup configuration that places it firmly among the most desirable CBS era Strats.
