Here is a Fender Jazz Bass, first introduced in 1960 as the Fender Deluxe Model, representing one of the most important evolutions in electric bass design. Developed by Leo Fender, it was originally conceived as a more refined, high-end counterpart to the Precision Bass, aimed at appealing to upright bass players and jazz musicians seeking a more articulate and versatile electric instrument.

The Jazz Bass introduced a number of key design changes that set it apart from earlier Fender basses. Its offset waist body and more sculpted contours, shared in spirit with the Jazzmaster guitar, offered improved playing comfort and a more modern aesthetic compared to the slab-style Precision Bass. The neck profile was also significantly narrower at the nut, with a slimmer, more rounded feel that made fast, technical playing more accessible.

Tonally, the Jazz Bass is defined by its dual single-coil pickup layout, with pickups positioned at different points along the string length. The bridge pickup delivers a brighter, more focused treble response, while the neck pickup provides a rounder, fuller tone. Blending the two allows for a wide range of tonal variation, from deep and warm to sharp and articulate, making it highly adaptable across genres.

Early versions featured a stacked knob control layout with separate volume and tone for each pickup, later revised in 1961 to a more familiar three-knob system with individual volume controls and a master tone control. This change simplified operation while retaining the instrument’s tonal flexibility.
