One of the most important amps Mesa Boogie's history, the Mark III launched in 1985 and brought a third "crunch" channel to the party, offering even more versatility to an already-winning formula of paint-peeling volume and a wider range of tones than any of the mass-produced amps of the time.
The Mark III was delivered in a variety of configurations, and this is the 60 watt version, and comes without reverb or the later graphic equaliser.
However, this one is the very sought after Red Stripe Version Mesa Boogie Mark III from 1987, and delivers 100% amazing Boogie tone. This particular example has only a few scuffs on the original tolex, and presents in very good condition for a 35 year old amp.
The original speaker was recently replaced with a new UK made Celestion G12M cream back 12’ which sounds great. The old Black Shadow speakers were great at power handling but suffered somewhat in delivering the subtle detail of that magnificent Boogie tone in all its variation.
Boogies are somewhat known for their ability to deliver searing, overdriven burn, but they are actually one of the absolute best sounding tube amps when dialled in to “clean”. Lots of harmonic chime and richness when set just below crunch, which is often missing in more basic circuits.
This classic amp is in very good condition and everything works as it should. It has recently had a complete set of new tubes installed (not cheap) and it is sounding magnificent. It has fantastic headroom and punches out crystalline clean tones with a shimmer that is like a vintage Fender on steroids. And the crunch/crush channel burns in a particularly Boogie way.
This amp is an export model, and is set at 240 volts, so you do not need a separate stepdown transformer to run this in Australia. It is missing its voltage backplate but the owner is currently tracking one down.
This is a superb tone machine and it has been very well looked after. A super bonus is that It comes with both Boogie footswitches so the pure tones at the cleaner end of the spectrum as well as the liquid breakup of the lead overdrive are all available at the tap of a toe.
It is certainly a beautiful sounding beast and its sonic dexterity means that somewhere in those wonderfully interactive Mesa Engineering controls is a sound made just for you.
Another bonus is its fitted aluminium and ply road case which is included in the sale.
