Maton Stage Delux Rock Maple – Aust 1992

Here is a Maton Stage “Delux Rock Maple” Dreadnought Cutaway, built in Melbourne in November 1992 and representing one of the more obscure and limited-run instruments from Maton’s early 1990s production era. According to the internal label, this example comes from a very short production run—possibly fewer than 100 units—and predates the later Stage Series EST65C models introduced in 1994.

This is a full-size dreadnought cutaway built around an AA-grade solid Sitka spruce top paired with solid rock maple back, sides, and neck. The all-maple construction gives the guitar a distinctly articulate and focused tonal character, with strong note separation, a bright top end, and a punchy midrange that cuts clearly through a mix while still retaining warmth and body.

The rosewood fingerboard and bridge add a touch of tonal smoothness and balance, while the 25.5" scale length and 44.1mm nut width provide a familiar, comfortable playing feel. With a 12" radius and 21 frets, the guitar plays cleanly across the entire neck, with a straightforward, functional design typical of Maton’s stage-focused instruments of the period.

Electronics are handled by Maton’s early piezo system, offering onboard volume and three-band tone control. While more basic than later EST systems, it delivers a clear, usable amplified tone suited to live performance, particularly where simplicity and reliability are priorities.

Hardware appointments include gold Gotoh Deluxe tuners, gold hardware throughout, black binding, and a natural honey gloss finish that highlights the figured rock maple grain. A black pickguard and rosewood bridge complete the understated but professional aesthetic.

Tonally, the guitar is bright, open, and responsive, with a strong midrange presence that suits fingerstyle, strumming, and lead work equally well. The maple construction gives it clarity and projection, making it a strong stage instrument with a distinctive voice compared to more traditional spruce/rosewood dreadnoughts.
