Martin 000-C David Gray Custom #1 of 4 Prototype - USA 2004

Here is a rare 2004 Martin David Gray Prototype, number #1 of only four built, and part of an extremely limited run that led to the official 2005 David Gray signature model. Developed in collaboration between C.F. Martin & Co. and David Gray, this instrument reflects Martin’s long tradition of pairing classic design with artist-driven refinement. Only 23 of the production signature models were ever made, making this prototype an even more significant piece of Martin history.

The guitar is built on Martin’s refined modern interpretation of their classic acoustic platform, combining traditional dreadnought-era tonal ideals with subtle contemporary appointments tailored to Gray’s playing style. It features Martin’s signature V-profile neck, a 24.9" scale length for a relaxed string feel, and a 16" fingerboard radius with a 45.2mm nut width, offering a comfortable and expressive playing experience particularly suited to fingerstyle and blues-based playing.

This example has clearly been well played over its life, developing into a mature, broken-in instrument with strong projection and the rich, open response associated with high-end vintage Martins. The frets show approximately 80% remaining life, and the guitar remains structurally sound and highly playable. The neck is comfortable and responsive, and the instrument delivers the low-tension feel and dynamic range that make these Martins so sought after.

Visually, it stands apart from standard Martin production with distinctive black herringbone binding, black body binding, and a matching black pickguard, giving it a subtle modern edge while retaining classic Martin aesthetics.
