Levin Model 40N Aristokrat Mandolin - Sweden 1949
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a 1949 Levin Model 40N mandolin, a beautifully preserved example from one of Sweden’s most respected and historically significant instrument makers. Levin was founded in Gothenburg in 1900 by Herman Carlsson Levin, initially specialising in violins before expanding into mandolins and guitars, eventually earning a strong reputation across Europe for quality craftsmanship and musical reliability.
The Model 40N was introduced in 1947 as the successor to the Model 320, representing a refinement in Levin’s mandolin design and build approach. The “N” designation denotes a natural finish, showcasing the wood in its most traditional and understated form. Based on construction details and tuner specification changes, this example is believed to be from 1949, a transitional period where Levin moved from metal tuner buttons to early plastic-button designs.
This mandolin is constructed with care and precision typical of Levin’s post-war production, and it presents in very good condition for its age. There are no cracks or structural repairs to the instrument itself, which is increasingly uncommon for instruments of this era. The original pickguard is included; however, it has deteriorated over time and has broken into multiple pieces, though it is retained with the instrument to preserve its originality and provenance.
Tonally, this mandolin delivers a strong, clear and projecting voice with a rich midrange and excellent definition. It cuts through a mix with ease while still retaining warmth and musicality, making it well suited for both ensemble and solo playing. The instrument is comfortable to play, responsive under the fingers, and holds tuning stability well.
Condition is very good for its age with no structural cracks or repairs to the body, only age-related wear and deterioration of the original pickguard. A fine early Levin mandolin with strong tone, historical significance, and excellent playability.
