Gibson Explorer Ebony - USA 2009
Pickup currently unavailable
Gibson introduced the Explorer in 1958, alongside the Flying V, as part of a bold push into space-age design. Players weren’t ready for it, and fewer than 25 of the original korina guitars were shipped over its first two years. It wasn’t until the 1970s that it found its audience, when Gibson reissued it in mahogany and hard rock and metal players adopted it. It has stayed in the catalogue ever since, and its shape is one of the most recognisable in rock, played by everyone from The Edge to a generation of metal players.
This one is finished in a deep Ebony gloss, which gives it a sleek, serious look. A cream pickguard breaks up the black body, and the gold-topped knobs add a touch of contrast. It has two humbuckers, a Tune-O-Matic bridge with stop tailpiece, a rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays and the large banana headstock with the gold Gibson script. The humbucker and bridge setup gives you the thick, punchy midrange and sustain this guitar is known for, with plenty of bite for rhythm and lead. It’s stamped “Made in USA 2009” on the back of the headstock.
It’s in very good condition, with a few light marks and scratches that come from normal playing and nothing that affects how it plays. There’s also a faint square mark on the back where a sticker has been removed, which only shows in certain light. It comes in a Gibson hardshell case with a cream interior, which fits the Explorer shape properly and protects it well.
If you want a proper American Explorer that’s ready to plug in and play loud, this one is ready to rock!
