This 2006 Gibson ES-335 has already lived a bit of a life. Originally finished in Sunburst, it has since been refinished and reliced in Ebony by Frank Grubisa of Grubisa Guitars. The work gives the guitar a naturally worn-in feel straight away - the sort of instrument that feels comfortable the moment you pick it up rather than something that still needs years of playing to settle.
Frank is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most celebrated luthiers and a true specialist in relic work and vintage restorations. His ageing is known for its authenticity, restraint and attention to period-correct detail, avoiding the artificial look that many relic finishes can fall into. We’ve had a significant number of Frank’s relic’d instruments pass through the doors at Premier Guitars over the years, and his work is consistently admired for capturing the feel and character of a genuinely road-worn vintage guitar while maintaining structural integrity and playability.
The ES-335 itself has always occupied an important place in Gibson’s lineup. Introduced in 1958, it was designed to bridge the gap between Gibson’s hollowbody archtops and their solidbody guitars. By adding a solid maple centre block to a hollow construction, Gibson created a guitar that kept the warmth and resonance of a hollowbody while adding sustain and helping control feedback. That balance is exactly what has kept the 335 such a versatile and widely used instrument for decades.
Being a semi-hollow guitar it has a lively and resonant response even before plugging in, which makes it a great instrument to sit with at home when writing or working through ideas. Through an amp it stays clear and articulate while still developing warmth and sustain when pushed. It is an easy guitar to connect with and a strong player’s instrument.
