Back in the early 80s, the very first Squier by Fender guitars and basses came out of Japan. Known for their excellent vintage quality look, feel, sound and construction, those early Squier instruments and their Fender branded counterparts are now highly sought after collector's items revered by guitars enthusiasts as examples of "getting it right" while aiming at value conscious players.

The story goes that the Fender guys came from the US to Japan packing some of the best original examples of USA built 1950s & early 60s pre-CBS instruments, and instructed their new Japanese partners to build to those exact specifications.

It has become legend that many, if not most Japanese built Fenders in that era were of better quality than their US made counterparts. In fact they were so good, the Fender people introduced the Squier brand to delineate the Japan built instruments from the US made ones.

This is an early Made in Japan JV series Squier Telecaster. This is arguably the most sought after of the JV guitars.

    Features -

    2 piece ash body

Beautiful butterscotch and nice wood grain showing.

    One piece maple neck

    Scale length – 25 ½”

    Kluson style vintage tuners

Combination of slot and Phillips head screws

    Vintage Telecaster bridge

FENDER Pat Pend with Serial # JV94xxx stamped on bridge plate

    Neck date is September 1984

    Pot codes are 137 8419 = 1984

    3 x adjustable brass saddles

    One ply black pickguard

Kent Armstrong TCHF-1 Tele neck pickup

Duncan Rails pickup in the bridge position

    Weight 6.7 lbs  …. yes 6.7 lbs !

This super lightweight JV Squier Tele is in great shape. It has been owned and played (a lot) by a busy player in Sydney for many years. It has a good pro setup and plays nicely in all neck positions.

This JV has had a good pro reftret at some point and there is no fret wear apparent on the new frets at all. Neck profile is a comfortable medium C.

A couple of expected dings and scratches here and there, but nothing offensive. The neck pickup area has at some point been routed for a humbucker – see pics.

The bridge pickup is now a fine sounding Duncan Rails unit, which will give you that Tele bite and twang, plus a little extra oomph, and without the single coil hum.

Neck pickup is a Kent Armstrong TCHF-1 which sounds authentically Tele.

Since the demise of Fender Japan a few years ago when Fender USA took over operations in all territories worldwide, this JV baby is destined to become even more sought after. Just like prime real estate, they don’t make ‘em any more.

This 1984 JV '52 Telecaster in butterscotch blonde is maybe as close to a ‘52 Tele as any reissue is going to get, and without the Custom Shop price tag.

Comes in a Fender gig bag in good condition.
