Aloha/Akai Style 2 Concert Ukulele - Hawaii c.1930
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a very rare concert-size ukulele from the Aloha Ukulele Manufacturing Co. of Honolulu, bearing the “Akai” brand stamp alongside the TABU mark. The Akai name was a pseudonym used by Tai Chong Goo, who was regarded as one of the standout builders associated with Aloha during this period. Instruments carrying his name were notable enough that the company itself actively referenced him in marketing, even posing the question: “Is it a ukulele… or is it an AKAI?!”
This dual branding reflects both his reputation as a master builder and the commercial appeal his instruments carried at the time. While produced under the Aloha umbrella, Akai-labelled instruments were promoted with a level of individuality unusual for the era, further adding to their collectability today.
What makes this example particularly remarkable is its condition. Concert-size Aloha ukuleles of this period are already scarce, but this one presents in virtually untouched, near-immaculate condition aside from changed tuners. The original case is also retained, adding to its originality and historical integrity.
Overall, this is a highly desirable early Hawaiian ukulele that combines rarity, documented maker association, strong provenance, and outstanding preservation.
