Vintage Kumalae Model D (4) Ukulele - Hawaii c.1920
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a beautifully restored circa 1920 Kumalae Model D ukulele, a rare and historically significant Hawaiian instrument from one of the most important names in early ukulele production. Crafted during the height of the original Hawaiian ukulele boom, this example has been carefully and sympathetically restored back to its original condition while retaining all of its original components and vintage character.
Kumalae ukuleles were produced in large numbers throughout the 1920s and 1930s, yet comparatively few survive today due to the delicate construction methods used at the time. Built from extremely thin koa timber and assembled with traditional hide glue, many instruments either dried out and cracked outside of Hawaii’s climate or suffered structural failure from excess moisture over the decades. As a result, well-preserved or properly restored examples such as this are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
This instrument is the desirable Model D, also referred to as the Model 4, considered one of the better standard-sized ukuleles in the Kumalae range. Unlike some examples that were later fitted with aftermarket tuners through retailers such as Sherman, Clay & Co., this uke retains its original wooden friction pegs, preserving both its authenticity and historical appeal.
The restoration work has been completed to an exceptionally high standard, with any previous cracks or blemishes now virtually impossible to detect. The instrument presents beautifully and remains true to its original specifications and aesthetic.
Included with the ukulele is a detailed booklet documenting the full restoration process, complete with photographs and historical information relating to both the instrument and the Kumalae company itself.
Condition is outstanding for its age, with all original parts intact and restoration work completed to a very high standard. A rare and highly collectible piece of early Hawaiian ukulele history with exceptional presentation and provenance.
