Vintage Kamaka Pineapple Style #3 Ukulele - c.1928
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is an early Kamaka pineapple ukulele, a highly collectible Hawaiian instrument from one of the most important and enduring ukulele makers in the world. Kamaka was founded in 1916 and remains in operation today, with instruments from the company long regarded in Hawaii as professional-grade ukuleles known for their craftsmanship, tone, and reliability.
The distinctive pineapple body shape, introduced around 1928, was initially seen as an unusual design choice but quickly proved its value through increased internal air volume, resulting in a noticeably louder, fuller, and more rounded tone compared to traditional figure-eight ukulele shapes. This design remains one of Kamaka’s most iconic and widely recognised models, still appearing in their catalogue today.
This early example features beautifully figured koa construction, showcasing the natural grain patterns that make Hawaiian koa so highly prized. The interior paper labels and headstock markings remain in very good condition, which is notable given that these details often deteriorate significantly over time. The instrument also features a very low pencilled serial number inside, which differs from the higher four-digit numbering typically seen on instruments from this era, adding to its historical interest.
Structurally, the ukulele presents well and plays comfortably with a low, easy action and strong tonal response. It delivers the warm, rich and resonant voice expected from early Kamaka builds, with excellent projection and a pleasing balance across the register.
There are two professionally repaired top cracks and one repaired crack on the back, all stable and well executed, with the instrument otherwise presenting in good vintage condition. It comes complete with its original case.
Condition is good for its age with honest historical repairs and natural wear, but structurally solid and fully playable. A rare early Kamaka pineapple ukulele with strong historical character, excellent tone, and desirable collectability.
