Vintage Gibson Bicentennial Thunderbird IV Bass - USA 1976
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a 1976 Gibson Thunderbird “Bicentennial” bass, a special reissue created to celebrate the 200th anniversary of American independence. Based on the early-’60s Thunderbird design originally introduced by Ted McCarty era Gibson, this model revives the iconic reverse-body shape and neck-through construction that made the original Thunderbirds such a distinctive force in electric bass design.
While closely modelled on the 1963 Thunderbird, the 1976 Bicentennial edition introduced some period-specific updates, most notably the 3-point adjustable bridge seen across many Gibson basses of the era. It also features the distinctive red, white, and blue Thunderbird logo with the “76” insignia, marking its place in Gibson’s commemorative production run. Later versions retained the patriotic bird graphic but removed the “76” marking.
Structurally and mechanically, the bass remains in solid working order. The neck is straight, the truss rod functions correctly, and the frets remain in great condition. All hardware and electronics operate as intended. The only notable cosmetic imperfection is a well-repaired old screw hole on the upper bout, likely from a previously relocated strap button.
Tonally, it delivers the powerful, authoritative low end Thunderbirds are known for, deep, full, and resonant with strong midrange presence and a distinctive growl that sets it apart from more conventional bass designs. It carries a natural weight and attitude that has made the Thunderbird a long-standing alternative to Fender-style basses.
