Vintage Fender Super Amp 2 x 10" Combo 5C4 Circuit - USA 1954
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a 1954 Fender Super Amp (serial number 6026), an exceptionally rare and highly desirable example of Leo Fender’s early tweed-era amplifier design. This unit features the transitional 5C4 circuit, positioned between the earlier 5B4 and later 5D4 revisions, and is widely regarded as one of the most musical and dynamically responsive versions of the Super. It represents a key moment in Fender’s evolution during the formative years of electric guitar amplification.
The 5C4 circuit is cathode-biased and powered by a dual 6L6 output section with split-phase inverter, delivering approximately 25 watts of output. The result is a highly touch-sensitive amplifier with a perfect balance of clean headroom and early, harmonically rich breakup. Tonally, it delivers the classic tweed voice—warm, forward midrange, articulate top end, and a smooth, compressed overdrive that develops naturally as the amp is pushed. The dual-channel layout (Instrument and Microphone), each with two inputs, provides four inputs in total, paired with a simple shared tone control that maintains the circuit’s direct and musical response.
This example presents in excellent vintage condition, with the tweed covering showing honest, light wear consistent with age. The grille cloth appears to have been replaced at some stage but remains period-appropriate in appearance and condition. Internally, the amplifier retains its original Jensen P10Q speakers, which have been professionally re-coned to preserve original character while ensuring reliable performance. It has also undergone a routine service with replacement filter capacitors installed to maintain stability without compromising its vintage tonal integrity.
Sonically, this Super delivers everything associated with early Fender tweed tone—lively response, rich harmonic complexity, and an organic feel that defined countless early blues and rock recordings. A historically significant amplifier that remains equally at home in the studio, on stage, or as part of a serious vintage collection.
