Vintage Ampeg ASB-1 - USA 1966
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a 1966 Ampeg ASB-1 Semi-Hollow Electric Bass, a distinctive and character-rich instrument from Ampeg’s mid-1960s expansion into the electric bass market. At a time when solid body designs dominated, the ASB-1 offered a refreshing alternative with its semi-hollow construction and strong influence from Ampeg’s heritage in upright and jazz bass design.
This model was conceived to deliver a warmer, more rounded tonal response compared to its solid body counterparts, and it excels in producing a deep, upright-like voice while maintaining the practicality of an electric bass. The semi-hollow build contributes to a softer attack and a fuller low end, allowing it to sit in a mix with a more organic and controlled presence.
This 1966 example captures that tonal identity beautifully. It offers a rich, resonant low end with smooth mids and a more subdued top end, making it particularly well suited to expressive, dynamic playing styles. The response is sensitive to touch, rewarding players who favour nuance and feel over aggressive attack.
A unique feature of this instrument is the signature of Bob Daisley on the back of the body beneath the neck plate. Known for his work with Ozzy Osbourne and Rainbow, Daisley’s contribution to shaping a powerful and defined bass presence in rock music adds an extra layer of interest and collectability to this piece.
Condition is very good for its age, with expected signs of use consistent with a well-played vintage instrument. Structurally sound and highly playable, it remains a compelling example of a different direction in 1960s bass design.
