Vintage Fender Precision Bass Refin - USA 1962
Pickup currently unavailable
When Leo Fender introduced the Precision Bass in 1951, he changed the instrument forever, giving bass players a fretted, portable, amplifiable alternative to the upright double bass for the first time. By 1957 the design had evolved into the form still used today: a contoured, offset body borrowed from the Stratocaster, a four-in-line headstock, and a single split-coil pickup delivering the deep, punchy fundamental that has anchored recordings across every genre of popular music since. Simple, rugged, and endlessly reliable, the Precision Bass remains the benchmark by which every electric bass that followed is measured.
This 1962 example, serial number 75826, carries a three-tone sunburst finish that has been professionally refinished, over a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard and the tortoiseshell pickguard typical of the era. The split-coil pickup pairs a 1960s Fender "black bottom" half with a 1960s "grey bottom" half, both rewound, a combination prized by vintage Fender collectors for retaining that unmistakable growling, woody low end while adding a touch more output and clarity on top.
Frets, tuners, bridge, and pickguard and plastics are all original to the instrument, giving it the feel and playability of a genuine early 1960s Fender bass, comfortable in the hand with the slim, fast neck profile that made the Precision Bass a favourite of working bassists. The pots have been replaced and the tone capacitor upgraded to an Orange Drop, a well regarded modern equivalent that keeps the tone smooth and musical as it rolls off. Worth noting for transparency, the headstock angle sits very slightly off true, a detail our technician has confirmed does not affect playability or performance in any way. Played through an amp, this bass delivers exactly what the Precision Bass is famous for: a deep, punchy, thoroughly musical low end with plenty of growl on the attack. It comes housed in a non-original black Mammoth hardshell case.
