A Taylor 12-string that actually behaves itself is a rare thing, and this 455-RCE is a very good example. The jumbo cutaway body gives the twelve strings room to breathe, and you hear it straight away: big, bright, chiming octave shimmer on top, with a deep and rounded low end underneath. Strum a few open chords and the whole guitar rings like a small orchestra.
The Sitka spruce top keeps everything clear and articulate, so fingerpicked passages and individual notes don’t smear into the usual 12-string wash. The rosewood back and sides add warmth and sustain, and the ebony fingerboard feels fast and smooth under the hand. The cutaway gives comfortable access to the upper frets, which isn’t something every 12-string offers.
Taylor are known for necks that feel easy to play, and that carries over here. For a guitar with twice the strings it feels remarkably comfortable. The onboard electronics mean it’s ready for the stage or a recording session as well as the lounge room. The finish is bright and clean, the red tortoise-style pickguard sits well against the natural top, and the chrome tuners are tidy and tracking nicely. It’s in excellent condition and comes in its original Taylor hardshell case.
According to Taylor’s date-based serial number, this guitar was built on 6 August 2003, which makes it a well-seasoned example from the El Cajon factory that still looks and plays like a much newer instrument. Twelve strings, a rosewood body and a Sitka spruce top is a combination that has made rooms sound bigger for a very long time.
