Gary Rizzolo SJ Custom – Australia 2013

Here is a 2013 Rizzolo custom acoustic guitar, hand-built in Melbourne by master luthier Gary Rizzolo, whose work draws on decades of experience in repair, restoration, and bespoke instrument building. Known for highly personalised, player-focused designs, Rizzolo guitars are crafted in close collaboration with musicians to achieve exceptional tonal results and individuality.

This example features an American black walnut back and sides paired with a Sitka spruce top displaying striking bearclaw figuring, producing a clear, powerful voice with strong projection, bright articulation, and a well-balanced low end. The 15-inch Florentine cutaway body enhances upper-fret access while maintaining excellent resonance and responsiveness.

This example features a carefully detailed construction including rosewood bridge, headstock, and binding, complemented by an ebony fingerboard with maple and walnut purfling for added visual contrast. Sassafras veneer detailing on the soundhole and truss rod cover adds a distinctive custom aesthetic unique to this build.

Playability is excellent, with a smooth medium-low action and a comfortable neck that allows effortless movement across the fingerboard. The guitar feels highly responsive and open, delivering a strong, dynamic voice suited to both intricate fingerpicking and full strumming.

Condition is excellent, showing careful ownership with minimal visible wear across the body and neck. The instrument presents very cleanly overall and reflects the level of care it has received since being built.
