Vintage Gibson Byrdland – USA 1966
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a 1966 Gibson Byrdland, a beautifully crafted example of one of Gibson’s most refined and distinctive archtop designs, originally developed in 1955 in collaboration with jazz guitarists Billy Byrd and Hank Garland. The Byrdland has long been associated with players such as Ted Nugent, Herb Ellis, and George Benson, and remains a highly regarded instrument for its elegance, playability, and smooth jazz-focused voice.
This example features a thinner-than-standard archtop body with a carved spruce top and laminated maple back and sides, delivering a highly responsive and articulate acoustic character. The reduced body depth enhances comfort and reduces feedback while maintaining the warmth and complexity expected from a premium Gibson hollowbody.
It is fitted with a 23 1/2-inch short scale length, making the instrument notably easier to play with reduced string tension and a fast, fluid feel. The three-piece maple neck with ebony fingerboard provides stability and a refined playing surface, while the florentine cutaway offers improved upper fret access compared to the standard venetian design.
Electronics consist of dual humbuckers with individual volume and tone controls and a three-way selector switch, offering a wide tonal palette from warm, smooth jazz voicings to more aggressive, driven textures when pushed. The floating bridge and tailpiece setup contributes to its open, resonant character and dynamic response.
Tonally, the Byrdland excels in clean and expressive settings, producing a sweet, rounded voice with subtle top-end sparkle. When driven, it retains clarity and musicality, making it suitable for both traditional jazz and more modern, expressive styles.
