Aloha Tabu Akai Ukulele - Hawaii 1920/30s
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is an early Hawaiian Aloha Ukulele attributed to Akai, a historically significant instrument from the formative years of Hawaiian ukulele manufacturing. Akai is recorded in the 1925 Honolulu business directory as a ukulele maker associated with the Aloha Ukulele Manufacturing Co., with examples of his work also appearing in Aloha-branded instruments dating back to the late 1910s. Instruments from this period are closely tied to the early development of the ukulele industry in Hawaii and are highly regarded for their craftsmanship and authenticity.
The Tabu brand marking found inside the instrument further confirms its Hawaiian origin. The Tabu name was used by multiple Honolulu makers between approximately 1916 and 1935, during a period when Hawaiian-built instruments were gaining popularity while also being widely imitated by mainland manufacturers falsely claiming Hawaiian origin. As a result, verified Hawaiian-made examples from this era are especially collectible.
This ukulele presents in excellent condition for its age, showing only light signs of historical use. There is a single very fine hairline crack on the back, but otherwise the instrument remains remarkably clean and well preserved. It retains largely original components, with the exception of replaced tuning machines, which function well and provide stable tuning performance.
Tonally, the instrument is lively and expressive, producing a strong, articulate voice with impressive volume and clarity. It responds well to both strumming and melodic playing, with a bright, open character typical of early Hawaiian builds.
Included with the instrument are both its original case and an additional newer hard shell case. Also included is a rare 1924 “EZ Method for Ukulele” instructional magazine, adding further historical interest and provenance.
Condition is very good for its age with minimal structural issues, a single minor back crack, and well-preserved original character. A rare early Hawaiian ukulele with strong historical connections, excellent tone, and valuable period documentation.
