SOLD - Vintage Martin 2-17 Flat Top - USA 1928
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a beautiful pre-war Martin 2-17, a historically significant model from the early 20th century that represents an important chapter in Martin’s evolution during the Great Depression era. Introduced in the 1920s, the 2-17 was one of the first Martin guitars designed specifically with bracing for steel strings, marking an important innovation at a time when most flat-top models were still primarily built for gut strings.
This example features an all-mahogany small-bodied design, slightly smaller than a standard 0-size, delivering a warm, woody, and intimate tonal character. It is fitted with a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, along with elegant rosewood binding, setting it apart from later 17-series instruments. The understated rosette and traditional proportions give it a classic, timeless aesthetic.
Playability is excellent for its age, with a comfortable feel and a surprisingly lively, resonant response. The guitar remains structurally sound and highly playable, offering an authentic vintage voice that suits fingerstyle playing and light strumming beautifully.
Condition is very good for an instrument approaching 100 years old. There is a small cosmetic separation at the back near the heel where the side has lifted slightly from the binding, though this is purely visual and does not affect structure, tone, or playability. A light belly bulge is present, consistent with vintage instruments of this era, and requires no attention. The tuners function well, and the frets show light wear with plenty of life remaining.
