Mesa Boogie Mark IIA Combo – USA 1979
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a 1979 Mesa/Boogie Mark II combo amplifier, a landmark piece in the evolution of high-gain American tube amplification and an important early example from one of the most influential boutique amplifier builders in history. Mesa/Boogie, founded by Randall Smith, played a pivotal role in redefining guitar amplification by introducing higher gain structures, cascading preamp stages, and professional-grade compact combo designs that would go on to shape modern rock tone.
The origins of Mesa/Boogie trace back to Smith’s early work modifying small Fender combo amplifiers, most famously transforming low-wattage Princeton-style circuits into high-powered, harmonically rich amplifiers capable of rivaling much larger rigs. These early modifications gained attention from prominent musicians of the era, including Carlos Santana, whose experience with one of Smith’s modified amps famously led to the “Boogie” name.
By the late 1970s, Mesa Engineering had fully evolved into a production amplifier company, with the Mark series representing its flagship designs. The Mark II—introduced after the success of the original Mark I, refined the platform with improved gain staging, enhanced tonal focus, and the introduction of channel footswitching, marking a major step forward in amplifier functionality.
This 1979 example represents an early production Mark II, dating specifically to July 18th 1979 as hand-marked on the chassis, a common feature of these early Mesa units. It delivers the signature Mark II voice—tight, articulate low end, a focused midrange response, and smooth, harmonically rich overdrive that responds dynamically to player input and guitar volume adjustments.
The Mark II’s preamp design places gain stages after the tone stack, resulting in a more controlled and defined distortion character compared to earlier designs, with a tighter overall response that became highly sought after by professional players.
This series remained in production through the early 1980s before evolving into the multi-channel Mark III platform, which further expanded Mesa’s high-gain capabilities.
