Vintage Guild D-40 - 1973
Pickup currently unavailable
Guild was founded in 1952 in Manhattan, New York by Alfred Dronge, initially building archtop guitars for the city’s busy jazz scene. By the early 1960s, as folk and blues began to take hold, Guild shifted its focus and introduced dreadnought models like the D40 alongside the D50 and D55, offering a strong alternative to Martin’s D18 and D28 for players of the time. These Guild acoustics remain a cost effective alternative to vintage Martins of the same era, with strong build quality and blooming overtones.
Built with a Sitka spruce top and African mahogany back and sides, this example delivers a warm, open sound with a solid low end and a clear, singing top. It sits comfortably in that familiar dreadnought space, offering a similar character without the same price attached.
At some point in its life the guitar has had a neck reset, and the lacquer has been removed from the back of the neck, leaving a smooth, worn in feel that sits naturally in the hand. Across the body there are dings, scratches, and general wear consistent with its age, nothing out of place, just the kind of marks you would expect from a guitar that has been played rather than stored away.
It plays easily and feels settled, with a balanced response across the strings. The dreadnought body gives it plenty of presence, with a low end that fills out nicely and a treble that carries without becoming sharp.
It comes supplied with its original hard shell case.
