Founded in 1956 by Merv Cargill after completing an apprenticeship in violin manufacturing, Cargill Custom Guitars has become synonymous with precision and passion in the guitar industry. Merv's meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to achieving optimal tonality and finish quickly elevated the Cargill name, attracting notable musicians from his garage workshop in Melbourne's Seaford suburb.
Passing down his expertise to his son James, who now boasts nearly 30 years of experience, the legacy lives on in the same garage workshop. James continues the tradition, offering 'old-fashioned' service with a hands-on, one-on-one approach, maintaining Cargill's prominence in the industry. The workshop, filled with over 50 years of music history, remains an iconic hub of guitar craftsmanship.
This is a James Cargill Custom build, crafted out of the Melbourne workshop in 2015. Some interesting woods were used in the construction of this striking guitar including Madagascan Rosewood for the body, an Italian Spruce top and a Fijian Mahogany neck and headstock. The headstock has a Blackwood Fiddleback veneer, and the intricate binding includes green pinstripe combined with Ebony. Both the bridge and fretboard are Ebony, and the inlay is 2mm dot mother-of-pearl. There are a few aftermarket adornments on this guitar including the original owner's initials on the pickguard, his name across the 12th fret on the fingerboard, and a decal at the base of the top and on the headstock – all of which can be peeled away with ease.
When you pick this guitar up you immediately notice that it is a custom build due to the feel in the hand and the sound that comes from the guitar on that first strum. The attention to detail in these builds is second-to-none, it feels like home straight away. This Cargill projects coloured, balanced tones with beautiful warm mids making it a great guitar for a singer-songwriter. It's a great picker too, a very versatile guitar made by another one of Australia’s finest builders.
Comes in a Hiscox hard shell case in excellent condition.
