Gibson Custom Shop LPR-0 1960 Reissue Historic Makeovers Deluxe Brazilian - USA 2018

Historic Makeovers have spent close to two decades taking Gibson Custom Shop Les Pauls and pushing them considerably closer to the construction, materials and appearance of an original late 1950s Burst. Rather than simply refinishing and ageing an existing guitar, their Deluxe Makeover is an extensive process that addresses the instrument as a whole, including the top carve, neck profile, fingerboard, inlays, nut, finish and many of the smaller details that separate an original Burst from a modern reissue.

Offered here is a 2018 Gibson Custom Historic 1960 Les Paul Reissue LPR-0, serial number 08822, which received the full Historic Makeovers Deluxe package in 2020 and is finished in Dirty Lemon Burst. As part of the process, the guitar received a vintage correct top carve and neck work, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, cellulose nitrate inlays and 6/6 nylon nut. Historic Makeovers then refinished the guitar using aniline dyes and their specially formulated nitrocellulose lacquer before weather checking and ageing the finish. Their approach is deliberately restrained, with the checking, wear and finish designed to continue developing naturally as the guitar is played.

The Brazilian rosewood fingerboard is an important part of the Deluxe package, replacing the original Gibson fingerboard and completing one of the most significant material changes Historic Makeovers make to these guitars. The pickups have also been changed to a set of OX4 Low Wind PAF humbuckers, along with 1950s style knobs and a Historic Makeovers reproduction switch tip. The original knobs are retained in the case alongside the guitar's original hang tags and paperwork.

The Dirty Lemon finish works beautifully with the figuring of the maple top, with fine checking across the lacquer and natural looking wear throughout the instrument. Rather than simply looking like a factory aged Les Paul, the changes made by Historic Makeovers extend into the construction, materials and smaller details of the guitar, which is ultimately what separates a Deluxe Makeover from a conventional refinishing or ageing job.

Historic Makeovers Les Pauls are exceedingly difficult to come across in Australia, particularly given the complications surrounding the international movement and importation of Brazilian rosewood. As a result, examples completed to this level very rarely appear on the Australian market. With the Deluxe Makeover, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, OX4 pickups, original Gibson case, Historic Makeovers documentation, original hang tags and retained original parts, this represents a rare opportunity to own a properly documented Historic Makeovers Les Paul already here in Australia.
