Gibson SG Special - USA 2022

There isn't much excess on an SG Special, and that's really the point. Two P90s, a lightweight mahogany body and neck, a wraparound bridge and four controls are about all there is to it. The formula goes back to Gibson's earliest SG shaped Specials of the 1960s, and despite everything that has changed around it, very little about the basic idea needed improving. They're light, immediate and have a rawness that sits somewhere between the snap of a single coil and the weight of a humbucker.

This 2022 Gibson Original Collection example, serial #222620433, dates to August 14, 2022, based on Gibson's factory serial numbering system. Finished in Ebony, it retains its original pair of Gibson P90 pickups, which are a big part of what makes the Special its own thing, with plenty of clarity and attack when played clean and a thick, aggressive midrange once the amp starts to break up.

This guitar has also received two tasteful upgrades. The original black pickguard has been replaced with a tortoiseshell guard, which works particularly well against the Ebony nitrocellulose finish, while the original compensated wraparound bridge has been replaced with an upgraded Music City bridge. The original black pickguard and bridge are included with the guitar, allowing it to be returned to its factory spec if preferred.

The remainder of the guitar stays close to the traditional SG Special recipe, with a mahogany body and neck, bound rosewood fingerboard, SlimTaper neck profile, Vintage Deluxe tuners and the familiar four knob control layout with hand wired electronics and Orange Drop capacitors. It comes complete with its original Gibson hard shell case.
