Vintage Fender Musicmaster Bass - USA 1978
Pickup currently unavailable
This 1978 Fender Musicmaster Bass is the real deal—a naturally worn, vibey short-scale survivor with all the mojo you could ask for. Finished in a yellowed Blonde with decades of honest playwear, it’s full of attitude, charm, and unmistakable character. With rubbed edges, exposed wood, and years of real-world relic'ing, this is a true player’s bass—no artificial aging, just the result of a life well-lived on the road and in the studio.
Originally introduced in the early ’70s as part of Fender’s student range, the Musicmaster Bass shared DNA with the Mustang but featured a stripped-back, no-nonsense layout. Built in Fullerton, California, these short-scale models developed a cult following over time for their unique feel and warm, thumpy tone. The single-coil pickup offers a punchy, rounded voice that cuts well in a mix—perfect for fingerstyle, pick-driven punk, indie, and everything in between. The 30" scale adds a bit of sag and sweetness, and this one plays smoothly with a comfortable medium action.
The input jack has been professionally replaced, and a period-style thumbrest has been installed—both as part of a setup and service by respected Sydney-based luthier Luke Parry. The result is a rock-solid vintage bass that’s gig-ready, loaded with personality, and truly inspiring to play. If you're chasing vibe, playability, and a serious vintage look without the collector price tag, this Musicmaster nails it.
Comes without a case - but one can be organised if required.
