Vintage Gibson SG Standard - USA 1965
Pickup currently unavailable
The SG Standard arrived in 1961 and changed everything. Lighter than the Les Paul, faster to the top frets, with a body shape that looked like it was already moving at speed - Gibson had built something that would go on to define a generation of rock and roll. Angus Young made it his own. Tony Iommi made it heavier than physics should allow. Pete Townshend destroyed them on stage and made people want them more. The SG Standard didn't just survive the 1960s. It owned them.
This one is a 1965, and it sits right at one of the most interesting moments in SG history. That year, Gibson began narrowing the nut width, bringing in the slimmer profile that gave these guitars their reputation as the fastest-feeling necks the factory ever shipped. It's one of the reasons players who find a mid-60s SG rarely put it down.
The condition is exceptional. Cherry finish with light checking and minor player wear - the kind of honest aging that tells you this guitar was loved and looked after, not abused. Under the hood, it's remarkably original: four 1965-dated potentiometers, Gibson patent sticker humbuckers, original Kluson Deluxe double line tuners, and the Maestro Vibrola still in place. The original hard shell case is included. The only departure from factory spec is a professional refret, which has left the neck feeling dialled-in and immediately playable without disturbing the character of the original profile.
In the hands, it is exactly what a great mid-60s SG should be: light, fast, and alive. The patent sticker pickups deliver that clear, open, harmonically rich response that later humbuckers never quite replicated. At 3.135kg, it sits on the strap like it belongs there.
Strong, original, and genuinely playable. This is a serious vintage guitar.
