Vintage Fender Precision Bass - USA 1956

Here is a superb 1956 Fender Precision Bass, an outstanding example from the final year of the original single-coil Precision design before Fender transitioned to the split-coil pickup later that same year. This instrument represents the foundation of the electric bass as we know it today, and stands as one of the most important evolutionary stages in early Fender history.

It features a beautiful two-tone sunburst finish over an ash body, showing deep lacquer checking, honest player wear, and a rich amber patina developed over decades of use. The neck is pencil-dated 1-56 and exhibits the characteristic soft V to early C profile typical of this transitional period, substantial yet comfortable, with a naturally fast and resonant feel in the hands.

Under the guard, it remains highly original and exceptionally well preserved. The single-coil pickup retains its black fibreboard flatwork, cloth wiring, and original windings, with a pencil date of 2-56 visible under the pickup. The electronics feature Stackpole 250K pots coded 304-54* (late 1955 production), along with original cloth push-back wiring and its period-correct “brick” tone capacitor. All solder joints appear untouched, supporting its originality.

The body routing, neck pocket, and internal cavities show the expected clean hand-worked tooling and subtle router marks of early Fullerton production. Overall, it presents as a highly authentic, well-preserved example that has seen regular use but has been carefully maintained throughout its life.

Tonally, it delivers exactly what defines the early single-coil Precision sound, clear, woody attack with a piano-like low end and a naturally musical “thump” that sits effortlessly in a mix. Through a vintage-style amplifier, it produces the unmistakable mid-century Fender bass voice that shaped countless early recordings.
