Vintage Fender L-Series Precision Bass Refin - USA 1963
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a 1963 Fender Precision Bass, a highly significant example of one of the most important electric instruments ever created. First introduced in 1951 by Leo Fender, the Precision Bass was the first widely successful electric bass guitar, fundamentally changing how rhythm sections were built and shaping the sound of country, jazz, rock, and early rock & roll.
By 1963, the Precision Bass had evolved into what is now considered its classic early-’60s specification. Key refinements introduced in the late 1950s had become standard, including the split-coil pickup design, anodised aluminium pickguard, wider headstock influenced by the Stratocaster design language, and a shift away from string-through-body construction to a bridge-mounted string termination. These changes helped define the familiar Precision Bass voice that remains a benchmark to this day.
This example is a vintage 1963 P-Bass in good player-grade condition, refinished long ago in natural. It shows evidence of real-world use, having previously served as a working instrument for a high-profile player from a well-known UK band, adding further provenance and character.
It retains its original-style hardware appointments, including the anodised aluminium pickguard, bridge cover, and thumb rest. The original tuners remain in place and function correctly, holding pitch reliably. The neck shows extensive play wear, now worn smooth to a slick, “played-in” feel reminiscent of a well-used instrument that has seen decades of use.
Tonally, it delivers the unmistakable early-’60s Precision Bass sound—full, punchy, and well-balanced across all registers, with no weak or uneven response points. The likely original pickup produces strong low-end weight and classic midrange authority, while the electronics remain fully functional with smooth, responsive volume and tone controls.
