Vintage Bandmaster Amp & Cabinet - USA 1961
Pickup currently unavailable
Here is a 1961 Fender Stratocaster and Fender Bandmaster amplifier rig, an exceptionally rare and historically significant matched set originating from early 1960s Scottsbluff, Nebraska, USA. This complete Fender package represents a preserved snapshot of a formative era in American rock ’n’ roll, originally used by members of local teen band The Dynamics.
The Dynamics were formed in late 1961 and quickly became one of the most popular regional rock bands in their area, featuring guitarist Richard Rohnke, bassist Randy Meisner (later of The Eagles), John Ankony, and Larry Soto. The group performed early rock and roll instrumentals and vocal covers, regularly drawing large crowds at local ballrooms and dance halls. Their early recordings included a self-penned instrumental alongside covers of key early rock and soul tracks, reflecting the evolving sound of the period.
At the heart of this listing is the original Fender rig purchased new in 1961 by Richard Rohnke: a pre-CBS sunburst Fender Stratocaster paired with a Fender Bandmaster head and matching blonde 1x12” cabinet. The Strat and amplifier were used together during the early years of the band and have remained a matched set ever since.
Following Rohnke’s departure for military service in 1962, the instruments were stored at his family home in their original cases and covers, remaining largely untouched for decades. Tragically, Rohnke did not return from military service, and the rig remained preserved in storage at his parents’ residence before later passing through documented ownership changes, eventually being shipped to Australia in 2007 and acquired by the current owner in 2018. The set has had only three owners in total since new.
The Stratocaster is an outstanding example of an early slab-board pre-CBS instrument. It remains 100% original, with its original components intact and its finish exceptionally well preserved due to long-term case storage. The three-tone sunburst shows minimal fading, and the hardware remains clean and largely untarnished. The headstock presents in remarkably original condition, and overall the instrument retains a near “new old stock” appearance. Aside from a single documented cosmetic mark on the body—reportedly caused during a performance incident involving bassist Randy Meisner during stage choreography—the guitar remains in excellent vintage condition. It weighs approximately 7.6 lbs and delivers the classic early Fender tonal character: clear, open highs, strong harmonic content, and balanced, resonant lows.
The accompanying Fender Bandmaster amplifier and matching cabinet are in equally exceptional condition, presented in original blonde tolex with matching covers. The amplifier retains its original 110-volt transformer, with a step-down transformer included for safe operation. Sonically, it delivers classic early Fender performance—sparkling cleans, rich harmonic detail, tight low end, and strong projection suitable for both studio and live use.
