Here is a thing of beauty – a fabulous 1963 Fender Stratocaster in excellent and (almost) unchanged condition, and in the stunning custom colour of Candy Apple Red. This one is a sought after L Series Strat, which features a beautiful dark Brazilian rosewood curved fingerboard and all the other features of a wonderful pre CBS Fender.
This one appears to be all original apart from 3 things –
- An excellent pro refret by respected Sydney luthier Piers Crocker
- The original volume pot has been replaced, probably back in 1987
- Two tuners replaced by original period correct Klusons
- The tone pots were bypassed at some point. But all the original cloth covered wiring is now back in place as per factory spec.
This one features its original Candy Apple Red nitro finish, 3 x black bottom pickups, tuners, nut, bridge assembly & saddles, knobs, 3 way switch & tip, strap pins and input socket. All the original wood is intact & unmolested, and the pickguard is now minty green and still flat. But it does have the ubiquitous crack at the top of the neck pickup which is very common for this era of Strats.
It has a beautiful one piece C shape maple neck with and clay dot markers in the lovely dark Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. The back of the neck is naturally worn right through to the wood, which feels just great.

There are no body finish touchups. The original nitro finish has been naturally worn through in the expected areas, revealing Fender’s standard Desert Sand undercoat, and possibly another coat of what may be Inca Silver underneath.
Apart from some discolouration on the bridge saddles and expected dulling of some of the tuners, there is almost no tarnishing of the metal parts.
This one is way up there with some truly great vintage Strats we have listed. Super comfortable to play, it is a beautiful sounding instrument – clear, bell-like tones, with that wonderful woody sound from the neck pickup, plenty of snarl from the bridge p/u, and lots of pop & cluck from the in-between p/u settings. A spacious, almost 3 dimensional sound.
This is an exceptionally lovely L Series Strat – one of the best examples we’ve ever seen.
Comes in its original brown tolex Fender case in good condition.
