This is a light and lively, great sounding vintage Gretsch at a realistic price. As proudly proclaimed on its internal sticker, this Clipper was made in Brooklyn, New York, and dates to 1962 – in the middle of the company’s golden period.
Its architecture is classic Gretsch, featuring a single-cutaway thin-line hollow body and a single HiLo’Tron neck pickup. It is in good shape overall with some minor cosmetic wear. But most importantly, it appears to be in all original condition.
It has a few areas of binding rot which is endemic in older Gretsch guitars – nothing that affects its tone or playability, but rather a cosmetic blemish that some may find a problem but others may view as an authentic augmentation of its vintage character.
The pickup surround has a corner missing and there is some tarnishing of the trapeze base, but this 67 year old instrument is structurally sound with no nasty neck breaks or any other repairs needed to date.
The neck is clean top and bottom, and the original frets have lots of life left in them. It is flyaway light at 5.5 lbs. This Clipper plays comfortably in all positions, holds its tuning well, and sounds just fine – lovely tone with a nice blend of woodiness from the body and twang from the HiLo’Tron pickup.
Comes in a newer, quality hardshell case in excellent condition.
