SOLD - Vintage Epiphone Century Model E422T – USA 1969

by Gibson

$2,495.00 21002

The Epiphone Century E422T model was introduced in 1958 following Gibson's purchase of the Epiphone company, although the Century model had been around since 1939. It was a thinline, archtop, hollow bodied electric.

As with other Epiphone electrics, the peghead style changed over the course of the 1960s, and in 1961 the plate was removed from the headstock. The pickup was also changed in 1961 from a NY humbucker pickup to a P-90 and the pickguard colour changed from tortoiseshell to white. A three-quarter sized Century was also available from 1961 to 1967.

Epiphone described the P-90 equipped Century model as follows in their 1960 catalogue - "Fine tone, full range response, and easy-playing action distinguish the Century, a thin-body Epiphone with adjustable pole piece pickup. The sensitive pickup provides plenty of volume and wide tonal colourings, easily regulated with separate tone and volume controls. Full auditorium size in non-cutaway style, made with laminated arched maple top and back with matching maple rims and ivoroid binding. Fast-action mahogany neck with adjustable truss rod. Rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays. Nickel-plated tailpiece and metal parts.”

Although the Epiphone Century is often compared to a Gibson ES-125T, in this case the similarity ends with the basic shape. The scale length is 25 1/2 compared with Gibson's 24 3/4 inches which gives it an extra harmonic sparkle and acoustic snappiness that only a 25 1/2 inch scale can offer.

This is a light and lively thinline non-cutaway guitar with lots of vintage mojo. It has single-bound laminated maple top, back, and sides. One-piece mahogany neck with a wonderful medium C neck profile.

This one has had a professional neck reset done by respected Sydney luthier Piers Crocker. Piers also replaced the original bar bridge with a Gibson Tune-O-Matic unit, and installed some new Kluson Deluxe tuners. The original bridge and tuners are in the case.

This is a handsome old thinline with a character all its own. It plays comfortably in all positions, the neck is straight, the frets are fine, and the pickup sounds great. It has some minor player wear evident over its 52 years, but it is structurally sound with no repairs or reconstructions evident. A lovely piece of music history with more stories to write.

Comes in a later hard shell case with one broken hinge but otherwise in good condition.
