This is a fine sounding acoustic / electric mandolin from Samick’s Artist Series released in the early 1990s.
For decades Samick was the largest maker of stringed instruments and acoustic pianos in the world. They produced millions of guitars for brands like Washburn, Epiphone and many others. Naturally they were a bit quiet about this, but they certainly built up their experience and expertise.
They started selling their own brand name products internationally in the late 1980’s. The early 90’s proved to be their heyday in the US market where they helped support independent music stores by only selling their brand to independents, without list prices. Dealers were free to price their instruments according to their own local markets.
Although the brand never caught on all that well in the US, it did well in Australia and southeast Asia. And these ever increasingly hard to find 90’s models prove what good quality instruments these were.
This SM20E model has very little sign of player wear and it presents in fine condition overall.
It has a warm, even tone, with a super straight neck and easy playing low action. The single coil rail-style pick up offers up a nice twangy electric amplified sound.
Definitely a step up from “entry level” this Samick SM20 will suit an experienced player as well as those just dipping their toes into the mando world.
Comes in its fitted hard case in good condition.
