This is a relatively rare, and very well built Greco EX-800 Explorer, made in Japan in 1977. It is mighty close in spec to the original Gibson Explorers, including a nicely executed set neck joint, humbucking pickups and the original wiring circuit.

The Fuji-Gen Gakki guitar factory was the main maker of Greco guitars in the 1970s and 1980s. The Fuji-Gen facility was also the source of the acclaimed original Fender JV series guitars, which featured manufacturing quality of the highest standard, sometimes outshining their American counterparts.

Up until 1982, Nisshin Onpa (Maxon) made the pickups that were used in Greco guitars, and they are sought after, high quality units.

Neck profile is slim C. It plays fast with a medium low action. No dead spots. Frets are in good condition – some wear in some spots but not yet in need of a refret. Electronics are good, pickups sound meaty.

There’s some wear evident which is consistent with a 43 year old guitar - a few dents & dings & some lacquer chips in places, but nothing too offensive. Some tarnishing of the bridge & stoptail, but pickup covers & tuners are clean.

Grecos from this period are well regarded due to their rarity, build quality, outstanding playability, killer sound and bang for your buck. These have a strong reputation as ‘Gibson killers”. This is a fine Explorer style guitar in good shape, from a golden era of high end Japanese guitar manufacturing.

Comes in an Orville branded gig bag from the 1970s in good condition.
