SOLD - Gibson Pete Townshend SG Signature – USA 2001
by Gibson
$3,495.00 20219SOLD
This guitar was built at Gibson’s Nashville factory in 2001. It was a short production run to cater for orders as Gibson had oversold the 250 piece limited edition guitar of the previous year. In 2000 Gibson Custom Shop produced a Limited Edition Pete Townshend SG model with a production run of only 250 pieces worldwide. It faithfully reproduced the 1969 SG special that Pete played onstage at Woodstock, The Isle of Wight Festival and the famous Live at Leeds album. The Custom Shop guitar came with a few extra goodies such as a replica anvil case and listed for over AUD$5000. And Pete hand signed all 250 of them.
No surprise that they sold out immediately. So in order to cater for the unexpected demand created by the Limited Edition guitar, in 2001 Gibson released the Pete Townshend SG Signature guitar. This is one of those. It has all the features of Pete’s original 1969 SG Special and the only real difference between it and the Limited Edition is that the signature on the back of the headstock is stencilled & not hand written.

The neck is a medium C profile. It is nicely tapered and plays fast & clean in all positions. The double cutaways in conjunction with the high neck joint allows for easy access to even the highest of the 22 frets.
Everyone needs at least one P-90 guitar, because they definitely do sound different to humbuckers and single coils. And these pickups are absolute killers. They are clear and bright in lower volume settings, but snarl nicely when a bit of juice is added. And if it’s all-out you want, then turn ‘em up and stand back !
This guitar is in immaculate condition with minimal evidence of playing wear in almost twenty years. It has been played mainly at home and looked after well by a fastidious owner. It has been set up nicely and is so comfortable it almost plays itself.
This guitar sounds immense when played through a good valve amp. It might not be the most expensive guitar you may eventually own, but it will easily be one of the best.
Comes with its original brown Gibson hard case with “Pete Townshend” stitched into the black lining.
