Here is a story of a vision imagined ... and realised. It is the journey of a nice 1994 Gibson Les Paul Classic into a fire breathing Slash style sonic beast.
The owner purchased this ’94 LP Classic (# 4 2265) about six years ago with a plan to use it as a base for a conversion to the iconic Les Paul used by Slash on Guns & Roses’ “Appetite For Destruction” album.
But not any old conversion – this was always going to be a special one. Having had successful experiences with them before, the Aussie owner shipped the Classic to Historic Makeovers of Lake Mary, Florida.
From Historic Makeovers – https://historicmakeovers.com/
“HISTORIC MAKEOVERS® is committed to making your guitar look and feel just like its beloved vintage brethren from 1959. With processes originally developed by vintage guitar enthusiast Kim LaFleur, Historic Makeovers® is proud to be the gold standard in complete vintage makeovers. We have a team of specialists working together with one goal in mind: to produce the most accurate, most vintage correct makeovers the world has ever seen. All our original processes have been retooled and reformulated to make the best even better. Every single detail has been re-examined and improved.”
Kim LaFleur and his team then stripped this LP Classic back to the wood and hand carved a vintage “deep dish” profile into the maple top. They cleaned up the fingerboard, dressed the frets and refinished the guitar in 1950s nitrocellulose lacquer, including hours slow cooking in their refinishing oven, and a hot & cold treatment to deliver the correct lacquer checking and striations – a true vintage relic treatment.
They then installed a set of Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Slash pickups, a vintage spec lightweight aluminium stoptail, some vintage correct top hat control knobs and truss rod cover.
The result is the nearest thing to owning a Slash AFD guitar without paying huge $$$. The description for a Gibson Custom Shop Slash AFD reads as follows – “Built in the image of the legendary 1958-1960 Bursts and outfitted with technical and aesthetic choices tailored to the shredder's personal taste, the Gibson Les Paul Slash Appetite channels pure sonic destruction straight into your hands. The AAA maple top in a nitrocellulose finish is fashioned to the precise specifications of Slash's very own axe, and a quarter-sawn single piece mahogany neck and pair of Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Slash humbuckers deliver lightning response and the thunderous response that made Guns N' Roses rock royalty.”
And they sell for $8K up to over $40k for a Murphy Lab relic.
This one has all those features and more. It has been very carefully curated by Historic Makeovers to achieve a quite special and unique take on the iconic Les Pauls played by Slash on one of the great modern rock albums of all time.
It is excellent relic’d condition with a beautiful overall setup of the guitar from Historic Makeovers - slinky smooth action for great playability, huge tone and major vintage vibe.
