From Vintage Guitar magazine, May 1998, Eric Shoaf's definitive article on the evolution of the Les Paul Classic -
"Late in the (1980s) decade, Gibson's head of research and development, J.T. Riboloff, designed a reissue Les Paul based on the popular and collectible 1960 model. The key difference between this guitar and other Les Pauls in production at the time was the slim neck profile. In addition, Riboloff added other features to make the instrument faithful to the original such as a narrow headstock, thin cutaway binding, aged fingerboard inlays, inked-on serial number, nickel hardware, vintage-style logo and aged binding on body and neck.”
The Classic was introduced in 1990 with a retail price of US$1,529. The Les Paul Standard at the time cost US$1,169. The Classic's higher price was justified by its reissue-yet-modern vibe, greater attention to vintage detail and superior figured maple tops on the sunburst models.

This Classic was bought new from a major Sydney retailer in 2000, and has lived most of its life in its plush Gibson case. It has not been to a rehearsal, let alone a gig. It is in amazing, almost new condition. We have been all over it and cannot find a blemish worth noting. There are absolutely no dings, dents or & scratches on the body or neck. The original jumbo frets are unmarked & show no wear.
This one has a very nice, lustrous Goldtop finish, and incorporates the features desirable in these guitars including the narrow headstock, vintage binding, the green-ish inlays and vintage cream pickguard. This example also has "Les Paul Classic" printed on the headstock veneer and truss rod cover.
This 2000 LP Classic is a fine guitar. It plays beautifully & sounds like a great Les Paul should – thick and meaty yet subtle and textured when dialled back a little.
It has an excellent setup with a low action and fast playing neck.
It features a super nice 60s neck profile which is more true to the original 1960s neck, and not as tapered as later Classic necks. The slim neck profile is well suited to you guys & girls who don’t have huge hands.
It is in completely original condition with no changes or modifications. It is the cleanest 20 year old Les Paul we have ever seen – if you didn’t know otherwise, you’d swear it was new.
Overall, an excellent LP Classic ‘60 reissue with some characteristic features at way less than vintage or Custom Shop prices.
Comes in its original Gibson brown hard shell case with internal blanket in new condition.
