This is a 1998 Gibson Historic 1954 Reissue Les Paul Custom crafted by the company’s custom shop builders in 1998. It has all the classic features, including a 1-piece mahogany body, carved mahogany top, ebony fingerboard, plus Alnico V and P-90 Single-coil pick ups.
The Les Paul Custom was the first guitar to receive the soon to be famous Tune-O-Matic (ABR-1) bridge. The Gibson 1954 Reissue Les Paul Custom fat '54 profile neck is the Holy Grail for many Les Paul players who prefer substantial necks. If you're in this camp, wrapping your fretting hand around this juicy chunky neck is the real deal.
The neck pickup is an Alnico V pickup (also known as the "staple" pickup) which was developed in 1954, and borne from the tradition of the P-90, but with a clearer, brighter, more precise tone - one that many discerning players still love today.
The bridge pickup has been upgraded to an overwound Fralin vintage spec P-90 pickup. Warm and creamy, shiny and full of life, this lovely Lollar captures the very essence of the classic pre-PAF P-90, but a little louder. Roll back the tone, keep the volume in check, and you've got access to the liquid jazz lines Les Paul himself liked to play, or open it up full throttle and tap into the slightly rude and gritty tone it has to offer.
The original Gibson P-90 is in the case and included in the sale.
Other changes –
- one potentiometer has been replaced with a correct CTS pot
- the original capacitors have been replaced by high end Sozo brand units
- it is wearing a new Kluson ABR-1 bridge (the Gibson original is in the case)
Serial number - 4 9xxx
Guitar weight – 9.6 lbs
This guitar is in great shape and shows no signs of abuse or any major cosmetic flaws. There are some light pick marks on the guard, some tiny nicks & light scratches on top, and some buckle rash on the back, but nothing through the lacquer. There is some expected very light tarnishing of the gold hardware, but the neck and sides are super clean.
The neck is straight, the truss rod is fully functional and it has a nice setup with low action which plays beautifully in all positions.
This Black Beauty is a beast of a guitar – loud and rocking or sweet and subtle depending on your mood. It absolutely delivers in every way.
Comes in its Gibson Custom Historic case in excellent condition.
