The Gibson Chet Atkins SST is a revolutionary design that combines the best of Gibson’s acoustic and electric guitar technology. The SST is a solid body steel string acoustic-electric designed by the late legendary guitarist and producer Chet Atkins. The SST model was introduced in 1987 and was discontinued in 2006.
Unlike many acoustic-electrics, the SST has no resonating chamber or sound hole. The acoustic sound comes from the bridge mounted transducer with an onboard pre-amp.
This one was built in Nashville in 1988 and is in amazing condition for an instrument over 30 years old.
Top: Solid spruce top with beautiful Gibson double binding.
Body: Chambered mahogany body with chromyte (balsa) centre. Rear body contour.
Neck: One piece set mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard. Mother of pearl dot inlays.
Headstock: Headstock overlay with scroll Gibson logo.
Bridge: Ebony bridge with pearl inlays & under-saddle transducer pickup.
Tuners: Gold plated closed back Gibson tuners in perfect condition.
Weight: 7.5 lbs
The SST is the perfect acoustic guitar for live performance, especially if you like it loud. You can turn this thing up and it will cut through the mix with lots of tone and no feedback. This instrument has few tiny marks on the spruce top, not apparent in normal light. Some very light buckle rash on back, but nothing through the finish. In excellent condition overall. It features gold hardware with controls for volume and tone.
This guitar was made at the Nashville Plant, TN, USA on 10th January 1988.
The only change on this one is that it has a touch-up of lacquer over the serial number on the back of the headstock. Why ? …. we have no idea. Except that some Gibson serial numbers are stamped so lightly you can hardly read them. So maybe the number had been re-stamped and then lacquered over. Anyway, the serial number checks out to the date above, and we see no reason to think that this guitar is not what we think it is – a fine Chet SST from the second year of production, in excellent playing condition.
Comes in original Gibson hard shell case with interior blanket in good condition
