PREMIER GUITARS in Sydney has probably sold more of Gerard Gilet’s beautiful handmade instruments than any other dealer in the past five years.

Gerard has been at the forefront of acoustic guitar design in Australia for over 30 years, making instruments for a clientele of serious musicians and professionals. Gilet guitars have become highly regarded and sought after, especially since Gerard has slowed down his output significantly in recent years.

Every one of Gerard’s guitars are wonderful instruments, and this one is another example of his thoughtful design and impeccable workmanship.

This is an amazing one-off, a Selmer Maccaferri style guitar inspired by the model favoured by revered gypsy jazz artist Django Reinhardt.

In 1932 Selmer partnered with the Italian guitarist and luthier Mario Maccaferri to produce a line of acoustic guitars based on Maccaferri's unorthodox design. Although Maccaferri's association with Selmer ended in 1934, the company continued to make several models of this guitar until 1952.

In its archetypal steel-string Jazz/Orchestre form, the Selmer is distinguished by a fairly large body with squarish bouts, and either a "D"-shaped or longitudinal oval

Early Selmer models have a large, D-shaped sound hole (the "grande bouche" or "big mouth"), which was shaped specifically to accommodate an internal resonator invented by  Maccaferri. But his involvement with Selmer ended after only 18 months. Over the next few years, the design evolved without his input and by 1936, the definitive version of the Selmer guitar had appeared. It was officially called the "Modèle Jazz", but also known as the "Petite Bouche" (small mouth) or "Oval Hole". These later guitars have revised internal bracing and a longer scale length of 670 mm (26.38 in).

It is that Selmer model which has inspired the design of this Gilet instrument.

Gerard worked with another well regarded Australian luthier, Peter Villaume to design and create this Django style masterpiece.

This very special guitar was certainly a labour of love. Gerard told us it took two months to make the jigs alone. Only the very best woods were selected from Gerard’s store of amazing tone woods. The bridge is handmade from Brazilian rosewood, and hollowed out to add to the superb projection of this instrument. It alone is a work of art.

But the design element that makes this guitar stand alone is the Maccaferri style top design, in which an arched top is created by joining two pieces or pre-arched select spruce. Can you just imagine how precise that has to be to make it work ?

This is a fabulous guitar and an absolute joy to play. Naturally, it is quite a loud instrument with lots of midrange punch. But it a sweet sounding thing and very true to the classic Django / Selmer sound. It is in virtually new condition with barely a mark on it.

The build quality is impressive with an attention to detail which is testament to the high standards which have garnered Gilet instruments worldwide acclaim.

This guitar is built and finished to a standard that would fetch twice the price if it came from a boutique European or US builder. To commission such an instrument now would be at least AUD$10,000

But this one was built right here in Sydney, by one of Australia’s most respected luthiers. And it is available now, instead of waiting at least a year for a new build – if you could find someone who could accomplish a build of this quality.

Comes in its specially made fitted hard shell case in new condition
