It is difficult to overstate the significance of the Fender Precision Bass, an absolutely revolutionary instrument which was introduced in 1951. The Precision Bass can be considered the first true electric bass guitar, and its popularity was hugely influential in the development of country, jazz and rock & roll.
Double cutaway alder solid body
Single-coil split pickup
Tortoiseshell plastic pickguard
34-inch scale length, dot inlays
One volume, one tone control
It was basic, stripped down, totally playable, and it roared. The P Bass totally revolutionized the way musicians approached “the bottom end” from 1951 onward.
This particular P Bass was created in Fullerton California in 1960 or 1961, based on its serial number 66xxx. Unfortunately this one has no pencilled neck date which was possibly sanded off in the process of a natural refinish done in the early 1970s.
Other changes that we know of include new pots, socket & wiring, pickguard screws, and an era incorrect repro Fender sticker on the refinished headstock.
It was bought in exactly this condition in 1973 by its current owner, a high profile musician who has played on hundreds of recordings and on stages all over Australia & NZ for over 40 years.
It does feature a fabulous C profile figured birdseye maple neck with a rich, dark Brazilian slab fingerboard. Original nut and frets appear to be in place with little wear showing. Original pickup plus bridge & saddles are present, along with the often lost bridge cover and string cover plate.
The finger rest has been moved to an unusual but quite practical “thumb rest” position.
It has been played professionally, but not for some time. The neck is straight, the truss rod works, the tuners look great and are rock solid. The bridge and saddles are remarkably clean.
It plays beautifully, and sounds huge. No dead spots, lots of sustain and tons of tone. A true original in terms of design and application – a classic vintage instrument awaiting its next journey.
Comes in its custom hard case which is sheathed in a sexy black leather covering.
