Masterbuilt by Todd Kraus – Fender Custom Shop
Stuart Hamm is a world-renowned bass virtuoso. His resume includes performing and touring with guitar greats Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Frank Gambale. Stu has released several CDs as a leader, as well as instructional DVDs for Hot Licks publications. He performs bass clinics throughout the world and is regularly involved in major recording projects.
Back in 1999 Fender approached Stu about creating a signature model bass – the very first Artist Bass made by Fender Custom Shop. This is the first of only two prototypes of the Fender CS Stu Hamm Bass – the other was a 5 string model.
This unique bass was created by Custom Shop Master Builder Todd Krause in 1999. It is the only 4 string prototype, and the only one in Olympic White.
This post is from Stu Hamm when he listed this bass through True Tone Music (Los Angeles) in 2014 –
“Hey everybody I’m Stuart Hamm, how you doing? I recently relocated and when going through my locker I found a number of bass guitars that I decided I could part with. I thought that someone might want a little piece of history and an amazing bass.
This is Bonehead. This bass has a great history – it is one of the two prototypes Fender built me for a production line of the Urge basses. It was built for me by Todd Krauss of Fender Custom Shop. This bass is called Bonehead because I had the action set up a little heavier to play kind of more “bonehead”, with a little harder touch on hard-driving, tough songs.
I will also include the notes for the Crystal Planet album I played on with Joe Satriani. These are the tracking notes by producer Mike Fraser. The bass was played on Secret Prayer and House Full of Blues.”
This bass was purchased by the current owner direct from Stu Hamm when it was listed by True Tone Music in 2014. Is was also personally signed by Stu.
This is a 34” scale bass with both P bass & J Bass pickups, which can be used independently or blended. It has a nut width of 1 9/16” (40mm), with a lovely dark rosewood fingerboard. The back of the neck has no lacquer which provides that super smooth feel often found on vintage instruments.
Controls include master volume, separate bass & treble controls, a low-mid boost, and 3 way pickup selector switch. Circuitry is active, powered by a 9 volt battery housed on the back of the instrument. You can conjure up just about any bass tone you could wish for using a combination of the two pickups and the very punchy active electronics.
Stu may have had Bonehead set up with a higher action when he was playing it, but the action on it now is low and clean all the way up the neck.
Included is a letter from Stu Hamm on True Tone letterhead which states – “This letter certifies this is a prototype of the Urge II long scale bass built by Todd Krause with a maple neck. Slight discoloration on the horn where a peace sign used to be! I used this bass while recording “Crystal Planet” with Joe Satriani, and used it on tour as my go to Bonehead rock bass and had the action set up a little higher than my other basses. It says “Stu Hamm Proto” on the headstock. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.”
It is in excellent condition – hardly a mark on it. It plays beautifully in all positions with no dead spots and a big, wide open sound.
Comes in its original Fender moulded poly case in good condition.
