This is a very special limited edition Fender Custom Shop Vintage Custom 1950 Double Esquire Journeyman Relic, finished in Aztec Gold and built for the 2018 NAMM Show.
From Fender – “A new original, the Limited Edition Double Esquire Special offers a tasteful mélange of style and sound, combining a single-bound two-piece ash body with hand-wound Custom Shop Loaded Nocaster® pickups and modified ’51 Nocaster wiring. The blender pot allows you to blend the neck and bridge pickups, and the special tone cap & resistor offer a super-useable rhythm tone in the neck position.
The pair of Custom Shop Loaded Nocaster pickups includes a hand-wound loaded single-coil bridge pickup and open-loaded neck pickups, both wired to the three-way pickup switch with our tonally flexible “Modified ’51 Nocaster” wiring. Position 3 selects the neck pickup alone, with a .001uF capacitor and 10K resistor for a highly usable rhythm tone with slightly rolled-off volume and tone. Position 2 offers the neck pickup alone, wired directly to the volume pot, while Position 1 offers the bridge pickup alone, with volume and blend pot to mix in the neck pickup to taste.
Other features include a tinted AAA flame maple neck with 21 6105 frets, single-ply Eggshell pickguard, ’51-’54 bridge with brass saddles, vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut and round string tree. Includes deluxe hardshell case, strap and Certificate of Authenticity.”
In 1951 the Telecaster forever changed the guitar world. But before that Leo Fender built several prototypes testing various tonal concepts, neck fit, electronics, fret sizes and neck profiles before the final creation came together. This 1950 Double esquire, yes - an Esquire with two pickups, is an exact recreation of one of those early models.
Featuring wonderfully full bodied and balanced hand-wound 50-51 Blackguard pickups, a blender pot in place of the tone with additional resistor on the rhythm circuit for a sweeter neck tone, and a compound radius 7.25"- 9.5" fretboard, which was actually found on some of the original prototypes,

Weighing in at just 7.1 lbs this Fender CS Double Esquire is a light and lively tone machine.
This is a stunning guitar that presents 100% as new. It was bought by its one owner direct from Wildwood Guitars USA upon its initial limited edition release in 2018. It has never been near a rehearsal studio, let alone a stage. Which is a pity, because this is a great sounding guitar with looks to match.
The Custom Shop Nocaster pickups are reliably regarded as the best sounding Fender Tele pickups you can buy. And that is certainly the case with this guitar. The dreaded “wolf tone” or muted tone found on position 3 on original Teles is gone, replaced with a lovely full sounding but slightly rolled-off volume and tone. Fat and clear woody tones from the neck pickup which is on its own in the middle position, and plenty of spark & bite from the bridge pickup, which in turn can be blended to taste with the neck pickup. The unique wiring circuit adds a really useable sonic dimension to this guitar.
The neck on some of these Double Esquires is described as 10/56 V, but in our opinion the neck profile on this one could be best described as a full C shape. It is larger than a modern Tele, but nowhere near as big as the Nocaster reissues. Feels great to play - sweet & clean in all positions, with that very comfortable compound neck radius. And the deep tiger striping on the rear of the neck is really something to behold.
This is definitely one of the better Custom Shop Teles we have listed hear at PREMIER GUITARS. The light relic finish on Aztec Gold is subtle and really attractive without being garish. And sonically this Double Esquire certainly delivers the goods in every way.
Comes in its original tweed Fender Custom Shop case with lots of case candy plus Certificate of Authenticity, and Limited Edition Certificate.
