The SG Custom officially began life when the Les Paul moniker was dropped from what we now call the SG body after its brief run from 1961 – 1963. The SG Custom featured three humbuckers and a Lyre tremolo, with a white finish until ’68 when the standard finish became walnut.
The Gibson SG “solid guitar” design was born in 1963 when Gibson created a guitar with a thinner mahogany body and added a double cutaway with a slender neck profile. The SG is a classic design that is still in production today. This mahogany 1968 model epitomizes the look and sound of the sixties. And the SG Custom was the top-of-the-line model in the range, with upmarket appointments fit for a king (or queen).

This is a vintage Gibson SG Custom in original walnut finish, made in Kalamazoo Michigan in 1968. It appears to be in completely original condition, which is most unusual for these guitars. There is some honest player wear evident, including some dings, scratches & rear buckle rash. But it is structurally sound, with no cracks, breaks or repairs, which again, is a bit unusual for a genuine old SG. There is some tarnishing of the gold plating in places and some crazing in the finish, which just adds to the vintage vibe of this classic Gibson.
All original electrics including 3 great sounding pickups. All 3 pickups have the Gibson PAT sticker on the back. All pots appear original, as does the wiring except for an earth wire between the tone controls. The input socket has been replaced at some point. All other parts, plastics, and hardware appear to be as they were when it came out of the factory.
Straight C shape medium C profile with a fast, low action and relatively narrow nut. Medium size frets are in good shape with lots of life left. Original waffle back tuners look fab, and hold tuning well.
A lovely piece of Gibson craftsmanship from an era when quality was the hallmark of the brand.
Comes in its original Gibson hard case in good condition.
