This is the second variation of the original Gibson Les Paul Goldtop. The vintage guitar market of today would be quite a bit different if not for this groundbreaking, solidbody electric guitar. This Les Paul features a wraparound style bridge / tailpiece combination instead of the trapeze tailpiece found on earlier models.
This change was made by Gibson in their effort to create the finest solidbody electric guitar available at the time, without the sometimes troublesome trapeze set up.
This guitar also features what is referred to as the All-Gold finish. Unlike most examples which feature a natural mahogany body and neck, this guitar has been given the gold-all-over treatment. Although as you can see, most of that old gold lacquer has worn off the neck, leaving a wonderfully smooth natural mahogany finish. Feels fantastic
Original production of the Les Paul spanned the years 1952 through 1960, when the body shape changed to what we now know as the SG shape. The original Les Paul design was reintroduced briefly in 1968 as essentially a reissue of the 1955 Les Paul, with a pair of P-90 pickups, but with a tune-o-matic bridge. However, most collectors agree that the pinnacle of Gibson’s guitar making craft was the mid to late fifties.
This one was bought by its current owner direct from a USA dealer over 20 years ago. It has had a pro refret some time ago, and the neck pickup was rewound in USA by Lindy Fralin. Apart from that it appears to be all original.

The Les Paul is arguably one of the two most recognisable guitar designs ever produced. There is no doubt that the sound and look of the Gibson Les Paul changed the course of music history. Keith Richards, Hubert Sumlin, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Gary Moore & Mick Taylor are just a few of the players who have relied on a Les Paul during the course of their career.
This is a rock solid, very original ‘55 LP Goldtop which plays great and sounds wonderful. It has been set up and maintained for many years by respected Sydney guitar technician Piers Crocker.
A big bonus with this ’55 is that it comes in its original Lifton 4 latch case which is still in good, useable condition.
