The Gibson Les Paul Deluxe first appeared in 1969 as a version of the Les Paul Standard gold top. Initially, it had a pair of mini-humbuckers which used the same cavity as the earlier P-90 pickups, and in fact were mounted in modified P-90 covers.
By the mid 1970’s, full size humbuckers were available, but these are not common. In 1971, other finishes including natural, sunburst and wine appeared. In 1985, the Deluxe was discontinued, but was reissued in 1999 for its 30th anniversary. Many examples of the Gibson Les Paul Deluxe were modified to accept full-size humbucking pickups, but no-one got to this particular one with a router, and the excellent original mini humbuckers remain.
This example was built in the historic Kalamazoo plant in either 1970, 71 or 72 due to Gibson’s random serial numbering at the time. But we think it’s 1971 because its one owner bought it new in Nottingham UK in 1972.
It features the classic gold top finish which is starting to show some lovely natural striations in the lacquer, adding to its vintage appeal. The best thing about this LP Deluxe is that it appears to be in completely original condition – no changes, no mods, no tampering. The condition of this one is mighty close to mint.
The nut and frets are original, and wear is minimum in all positions. The rosewood fingerboard is quite beautiful and the action is smooth and fast with no flat spots or buzzing, all the way up the neck.
The electronics are original, and these mini humbuckers sound great – like the big HBs but without the mud. These are medium output pickups, with sparkly tops and the clear & full bottom end of P-90s, but without the hum. Outputs are B: 7.0 and N: 6.9.
Pot codes are CBA-811-1158 which Gibson used from the late 60s
This one has the era-correct neck volute, wider peg-head, three piece laminated neck, and a four layer ‘pancake’ body. The original Gibson Deluxe double ring tuners are present and hold tuning well.
It features a wonderful original deep gold finish which has naturally worn to a darker hue, with no nicks or marks marks apart from some very light buckle rash on the back. This LP Deluxe is super clean and in fabulous overall condition.
And the best part – it plays great, and sounds simply brilliant. Actually, it is one of the best sounding LPs of any era that we have had listed at PREMIER GUITARS.
At 9.6 lbs, it’s actually on the lighter side for an original LP Deluxe. The original Gibson Guarantee booklet and Selmer UK warranty papers are in the case.
